Seasonal Driveway and Walkway Snow Contracts in Waterloo

A seasonal contract removes the shovel from the picture for the whole winter. It does not promise a time of day, and a contract that does is promising something a storm will take back.

Through Beechwood, Lakeshore, Columbia Forest, Laurelwood and the streets west of Westmount, the houses are mostly on single and double driveways with a front walk and a few steps, and a lot of them are owned by people who have been there a long time. The seasonal contract is the right arrangement for most of them. The driveway is on a route, the trigger depth is agreed, and every snowfall that reaches it gets cleared without a phone call, from the first plowable fall to the end of the season.

What is included

  • The driveway, cleared when snow reaches the trigger depth, typically around 5 cm. The contract states what happens with a dusting below that.
  • The front walk and steps, cleared by shovel or small blower.
  • The windrow. The City works to 16 hours after 8 cm on a residential street and 24 hours after 10 cm on a minor residential street or cul-de-sac, so its plow often arrives long after your driveway was cleared and leaves a dense bank across the apron. Returning for that is part of the service, and a contract that omits it is leaving you the heaviest shovelling of the storm.
  • The public sidewalk along the frontage if you want it in, which meets the City's 24-hour rule without a second arrangement.
  • Salting as an option, applied when conditions call for it rather than every visit.

Timing, honestly

Routes run through the storm and after it, and in a long event a driveway may be cleared, covered again and cleared again. The City publishes its own service windows and they are measured in many hours; a private contractor working the same storm is not faster than the weather. If you must be out at a fixed hour regardless, say so at the quote and we will place the driveway sensibly on the route, but we will not write a time into the agreement.

Where the snow goes

On the property, to one side of the drive, away from the sight line at the street and the neighbour's side of the line. Not onto the road, which the City says directly and the Highway Traffic Act prohibits. Not against the house. The site visit settles which side.

Surfaces, trees and marker stakes

Interlock and stamped concrete get a protected blade edge; asphalt tolerates more. Mature trees in Beechwood and Lakeshore drop ice onto walks after freezing rain, which is an ice-control visit rather than a snow visit. Edge stakes go in before the ground freezes, which is one more reason the routes are set in the autumn.

Frequently asked questions

When does the season run?

Typically from the first plowable snowfall, often November, to the end of March or into April. The agreement states the dates and how early or late storms are handled.

What if it hardly snows?

The seasonal price is a fixed fee for being on the route all winter, so a light year costs the same as a heavy one, and a heavy one costs no more. If you want cost to track snowfall, per-visit is the other option.

My parents are in their eighties in Lakeshore. Is this the right thing or the City programme?

Check the City's Assisted Snow Clearing Program first: it is free for eligible owner-occupiers 65 or older, income-tested, and covers the sidewalk, apron and windrow but not the rest of the driveway or the steps, and 2026-27 applications are closed. If they do not qualify, or need the whole driveway done, a seasonal contract is the straightforward answer.
